Remembering the Sabbath...Keeping it Holy

Philippians 4:6-8
“Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Simply Saturday

Today we went into “town” in search some stores. We were able to find a DIY/gardening-type store to check on needed household items, i.e., curtain rods, shelving units, etc. It was interesting to walk around and observe the differences in terms. Here are a few:

Lawn Tic-Tac-Toe set = Naughts and Crosses
Zucchini seeds = Courgette seeds
Shopping carts = trolleys

It was a fun, but tiring day. We hope you enjoyed your Saturday!

This Week In Pre-School

As D week draws to a close, we are planning to make Doughnuts tomorrow, since we have had company over the past two nights, and simply ran out of time. Other than that, here is an overview of school activities:

• We generated a Dd word list from our discussions, book reading, and as a word comes up and Liam recognizes it as “another D word!” (Will seemed to especially enjoy this week, since the first word out of Liam’s mouth when asked what words begin with D was, “Daddy!”)
• Liam “wrote” D’s on his own sheets of paper. This week, Liam didn’t want anything but real, correct “D’s” written on his paper, so he wanted me to hold the marker with him while we made them—I continued to encourage him to try on his own, but he wanted them to look correctly formed. (Ah, perfectionism—I know thee too well!)
• We continued to review all of the songs and rhymes we’ve learned over the past four weeks, that all begin with or deal with A, B, C, or D. (Aine LOVES this part, too!)
• We enjoyed reading many new books, as well as old favorites, including “Dinosaur ABC’s,” “My Dad,” and “Dark Night, Sleepy Night.”
• Liam reviewed his first five catechism questions, in addition to learning the sixth regarding there only being ONE GOD. (Oops! In my last post I mistyped, so A. #5 was “Because He MADE me and cares for me.”)
• Liam learned a Bible verse for the week, as well as a song to accompany it. He learned Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to Me and do not forbid them for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” (Incidentally, this is the song during which Aine chimes in on the word “come” each time we sing. She gets so pleased to be joining in, too!) He is also working on learning the hymn “This Is My Father’s World” during this month of October.
• Liam worked on the concepts of old and new, as well as reviewed big and small. (opposites)
• Liam practiced fine and gross motor skills through use of Play-Doh, balls, etc.
• Liam counted as many D’s as he could find in alphabet cereal, for snack.

He is also potty training, which is going well and we hope to soon be buying our last package of diapers for him. So far Pre-School with Liam is off to a great start and everyday he seems more eager to learn. He is also learning to sit quietly and work diligently on certain tasks, although at this point it is obviously for a brief period of time. He continues to get plenty of active and free time, as well.

Thursday’s Thankfulness

Today I am thankful for a sunny day after several of the dark and rainy variety. Do understand that it will likely not stay a sunny day throughout ALL of the day—but I am thankful that this first part is bright and cheery! That is how it works around here. As we have begun a weather chart this week in school, the weather here presents quite a challenge in recording the weather, because the majority of the day rarely falls into one category or another.

I am also thankful for automatic washers and dryers. I say this because at times, with two little loves who are always spilling something on my and their clothing, it feels a bit frustrating that the washers/dryers here hold so few articles of clothing. And because the wash cycle alone takes nearly two hours to complete, laundry is a constant activity. We also have one of the typical dryers which is not vented, so you must monitor the water basin and pull it out and pour it down the sink after each couple of loads. So doing laundry is a lot more labor intensive than I was accustomed to, however, it is still better than using a wash board or other such old-fashioned approach, so I’ll be thankful for what I have!

Well, we’ll be completing D week here tomorrow, so the post tomorrow will be an update on Liam’s progress at that. “Talk” to you then!

Wednesday’s Wonder

Aine is adding more to her vocabulary, saying her own name, “come,” and kitty. She loves to sing about all kinds of things, however, there is ONE person who seems to lend the greatest inspiration for songs—DADA! Yes, Aine awakens calling for him, sings for him during the day (and at times, gets very sad when she sees his car is still not in the driveway,) yells his name the instant she hears the front door open—even if it’s NOT him yet! We figure that since Will was home more during grad school and could come out to play a few moments here and there during most days, she has “grown up” VERY attached to him! However, that all seems to have an expiration time of 8:00 PM, because at bedtime Momma is still the only one anyone seems to want or need! They’re so funny and sweet!

Lately, Liam is fascinated with “making pie.” He frequently comes around with colored Quattro blocks on a tray offering Aine and I a NEVERENDING supply of pieces of pie! (So sometime this week I told him he can make a real apple pie with me and that made him very happy.) Another great part of the whole “Pie Game” is that Aine is learning to pretend-eat the pieces of pie. At first she just grinned at me and Liam as we “gobbled” up the pie, but then she started to imitate us (while giggling, as she must recognize it’s not real food and she thinks that’s funny) and now she joins in as soon as the pie gets passed out.
